The Site

We worked for Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) on the high-rise tower in Drumchapel (known locally as 'The Drum') in the northwest of the city of Glasgow.

This project was the removal of all internal fixtures and fittings, the removal of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) and the demolition of the 24-storey former residential tower block.

The building is a tower block of flats approx. 30 metres long x 12 metres wide and 24 storeys high.

The building was constructed of concrete outer walls with a mixture of concrete block/brick inner walls and some timber studs and plasterboard inner walls. The demolition method was progressive fragmentation using a super-high-reach demolition rig from a safe working distance.

Our Scope

We were appointed as the demolition consultants for the project.

Our roles included checking the Principal Contractor’s Construction Phase Plan (CPP) and reviewing the Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) for the project before the demolition works began.

Once the contractor’s Construction Phase Plan (CPP) was completed, we were tasked with reviewing the plan and the Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) for the project, and continually commenting on the revisions and updates of both sets of documents.

Throughout the works, we carried out monthly audits, which were planned to coincide with the specific phases of the project, which included CDM compliance audits, and process-specific demolition audits.

What we did
  • Review and comment on the Construction Phase Plan and issue a report.
  • Review and comment on the Risk Assessments and Method Statement and issue a report.
  • Carry out the pre-start CDM site audit and issue a report.
  • Carry out the demolition process site audit and issue a report.
